About CoverMe Street Lighting Covers

How often have you walked past a street lighting column and seen the access panel completely missing, with no temporary cover? Or just covered with a single-use plastic bag or hazard tape? Too often. It's a danger to the public, and single-use plastic is a danger to our planet.

CoverMe Street Lighting Covers were designed by Peter Hoban, a 25-year highways industry veteran and the inventor of the CoverMe no-ladders-required bagging-off system, after a direct request from the London Borough of Bexley. Having seen the CoverMe traffic light cover in use, the council approached Peter to solve a different problem: street lighting columns being decommissioned and left covered only with single-use hazard tape. This created three issues, hazard tape going straight to landfill, exposed columns failing to properly seal off the danger inside (leaving rough edges and live cabling accessible, particularly to children), and no way to clearly warn the public of the hazard.

Peter designed the CoverMe Street Lighting Cover to solve all three problems at once: a reusable, sealing cover that carries clear warning and hazard information, eliminating the landfill waste, the safety gap, and the lack of public warning in a single product. He then developed the CoverMe Street Lighting Wrap as a companion product, recognising that access panel doors on street lighting columns face the same recurring issues. The Wrap uses a magnetic fixing to seal the access opening in seconds, without tools or ladders.

Seen in action — London Borough of Bexley

When the London Borough of Bexley needed to replace single-use hazard tape on decommissioned street lighting columns, they approached Peter Hoban directly. The result was two purpose-built products, the CoverMe Street Lighting Cover and the Street Lighting Wrap, designed to seal, warn and reuse, eliminating both working at height risk and single-use plastic waste in one solution.

What IRSS customers are saying about us:

"We chose the CoverMe bags for their ease of use and making the process of bagging off signals much safer by elimination of ladder use. This allowed us to use operatives from the wider highways pool as there was no requirement for ladder training."
Chris Pearson
Blackburn Council

"Having worked on the railway for 15 years, we have only ever used bin bags or shrink-wrap to cover signage, but we have finally found a supplier who can meet our needs on the infrastructure. Made from recycled materials, easy to install, avoids working at height risks/costs, and reusable — what a great product!"
Carl Miller
Siemens Engineer, Siemens Mobility

"CoverMe's ability to decommission and bag-off permanent lights saves time and money and totally eradicates the working at height risk."

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the difference between the CoverMe Street Lighting Cover and the Street Lighting Wrap?

The CoverMe Street Lighting Cover fully encloses a broken or exposed access panel, instantly sealing the column and preventing access to rough edges or live cabling inside. The CoverMe Street Lighting Wrap is a companion product that uses a magnetic fixing to seal an access panel door in seconds — designed for situations where the door itself needs securing rather than the full column opening. Both were developed for London Borough of Bexley to replace single-use hazard tape with a reusable, sealing solution that clearly warns the public of the hazard.

What types of street lighting column do CoverMe products fit?

CoverMe Street Lighting Covers and Wraps are manufactured to fit your specific street lighting stock. IRSS UK works directly with councils and contractors to ensure the right size and fit for their column types. Contact us with your column specifications and we'll advise on the right solution.

Do I need ladder training to install CoverMe street lighting covers?

No. CoverMe street lighting covers are designed to be installed entirely from ground level, eliminating the need for ladder access or working at height. As Blackburn Council found, this also means operatives from the wider highways pool can be used without specialist ladder training requirements.

Are CoverMe street lighting covers compliant with UK safety regulations?

Yes. CoverMe street lighting covers are designed to help councils and contractors meet their duty of care obligations under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 by eliminating ladder use entirely. The covers also replace single-use plastic bags and hazard tape, supporting environmental compliance and reducing landfill waste.

Can CoverMe street lighting covers be branded with our logo?

Yes. CoverMe street lighting covers are fully customisable with your organisation's logo and any warning or hazard information you require. This is particularly useful for councils and utilities who want a professional, on-brand appearance in public-facing locations.

How quickly can CoverMe street lighting covers be deployed on site?

CoverMe street lighting covers can be deployed in seconds by a single operative from ground level. There is no requirement for ladders, elevated platforms or a two-person team, significantly reducing both installation time and the cost of each deployment compared to traditional methods.

What are the benefits?

Hazard tape and single-use plastic bags - which ultimately go to landfill - are typically used to cover broken street lighting columns. Our CoverMe Street Lighting Covers:

  • Instantly seals the column and prevents any danger to the public
  • Manufactured from recyclable material
  • Reusable and therefore eco-friendly
  • Fully-customisable with your logo and warning information
  • Manufactured to fit your street lighting stock and requirements
